About Breaking New York

Breaking New York is an independent news wire covering the five boroughs — City Hall and Albany, real estate and development, the MTA and the airports, business, culture, and food. We move fast, we date everything, and we name our sources.

The wire exists because New York generates more news in a day than any single desk can chase, and because the stories that move the city — a council override, a rezoning, a transit cut, a restaurant closing — too often reach readers stripped of the documents, dates, and named officials that make them verifiable. We publish the source trail alongside the story.

What we cover

Six desks: Politics (City Hall, the council, Albany, the campaigns), Real Estate (the market and the development pipeline), Transit (the MTA, the Port Authority, congestion pricing, the streets), Business (finance, tech, retail, the firms), Culture (museums, theater, music, nightlife), and Food (openings, closings, and the economics of the New York restaurant).

How we work

Every piece is reported against our methodology and the current version of our editorial standard. We verify named entities, dates, dollar figures, and official actions against primary sources — agency records, council files, court filings, public data — before publication. When we get something wrong, we fix it in the open and log it to the corrections page.

Bylines

Breaking New York publishes under a single house byline — the Breaking New York newsroom — rather than crediting individual reporters on each piece. It is an old wire-service convention: the desk stands behind the reporting as one institution, and the accountability runs to the publication, not to a personal brand. How the desk is organized is described on the masthead.

Who publishes it

Breaking New York is published by Five Boroughs Media Co., an independent media company at 20 Jay Street, Suite 600, Brooklyn, NY 11201. The wire is registered under ISSN 3098-1204 and has operated since September 2021. We take no press junkets and run no sponsored coverage in the news desks; any commercial relationship with a subject is disclosed in the piece.
