Four New York City bars landed in the global top 50 of The World’s 50 Best Bars 2025, announced Oct. 8, 2025 at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal in Hong Kong, where the East Village’s Superbueno finished as the city’s highest-ranked bar at No. 12.
The night’s top global honor went to Bar Leone in Hong Kong, the first Asia-based bar to be named the world’s best in the list’s 17-year history. But New York reasserted its standing as North America’s cocktail capital, placing four rooms in the top 50 spanning the East Village, the West Village, the Lower East Side and the Financial District.
The New York four
- Superbueno — No. 12. The Mexican-American cocktail bar at 13 First Avenue in the East Village, created by Ignacio “Nacho” Jimenez with Cocktail Kingdom Hospitality. It climbed 15 places from the prior year and was the city’s top finisher. Jimenez also won Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service at the 2025 James Beard Awards.
- Sip & Guzzle — No. 39. The West Village bar at 29 Cornelia Street, co-created by Tokyo’s Shingo Gokan and New York’s Steve Schneider, took the list’s Best New Opening award.
- Double Chicken Please — No. 41. The Lower East Side bar at 115 Allen Street, known for “culinary cocktails” such as its Cold Pizza drink.
- Overstory — No. 46. The high-altitude bar on the 64th floor at 70 Pine Street in the Financial District, with 360-degree views.
A capital reasserted
New York has been a fixture near the top of the global cocktail conversation for years, and the 2025 results — four bars in the top 50, plus additional New York entries on the extended 51–100 list released in September — kept the city ahead of other American metros. Superbueno’s rise to No. 12 in particular underscored the momentum behind a new generation of New York bars built around a clear culinary point of view rather than a classic-cocktail template.
The ceremony itself marked a milestone: the list’s return to Asia for only the second time, and Bar Leone’s ascent from No. 2 in 2024 to No. 1, completing one of the fastest climbs the program has recorded for a bar barely two years old.
Why it matters
The 50 Best lists — for restaurants and bars alike — function as global tourism and trade signals. A top-50 placement reliably drives reservations, raises a bar’s profile with visiting industry talent, and helps recruiting. For New York, the rankings double as a scorecard in a long-running rivalry with London and, increasingly, Asian cities for cocktail-world prestige.
The 2025 results suggest the city’s strength is broad rather than concentrated in a single famous room: the four ranked bars sit in four different neighborhoods, run by different teams, with different styles — from Superbueno’s Mexican-American agave program to Overstory’s sky-high setting.
